Unsolved murder mysteries still unsolved – Keith Bennet; The Moors Murders by Ian Brady and Myra Hindley

Keith Bennet was unfortunately a victim of the gruesome and heinous acts of Ian Brady and Myra Hindley. The Moors murderers are still haunting in Manchester today. Many people still remember his name throughout the generations. It’s a devastating case where children were murdered and hidden in the Moors – Saddleworth Moors are high moorland located in the Pennines split between Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire. His body has still not been recovered as I write this in 2026. It’s important to still remember that he is still out there, and, one day, hopefully he can be found, and laid to rest.

Being from Manchester myself, it’s an ominous city at times, it’s eerie to know that you could grow up in the same areas and managed to survive a childhood, whilst so many around didn’t have that same privilege.

If there’s anyone who still uncovers unsolved crimes, still searches unsolved crimes in Manchester, or has an interest in cold cases in Manchester, then, please, remember Keith Bennett.

The Moors are huge! So, it’s understandable that it’s hard to search the area when it spans so wide. The police have spent years searching at different points, whilst both, Ian and Myra, did not give his location, and now, can never give his location. Myra Hindley died on November 15, 2002, and Ian Brady died on May 15, 2017 – both refused to give locations for many years, and then claimed they could not remember, or had forgotten due to the time.

When murder happens, which is calculated against society, it strikes in a different way. A real truth in Manchester from where I grew up was aggression was normalised in different ways, and tiers. We can justify, rationalise, and even excuse gang violence when it’s murder – not in the sense of condone, or agree it should happen, moreso, that they “rivalled each other” in a consensually-non-consensually way. We can understand when a fight maybe went to far, and damage was caused, which wasn’t the intent, and ended tragically.

However, majority will never condone, justify, excuse, or agree with calculating raping, torturing, and murdering children because that’s what these murderers did.

I won’t shy away or censor words on my blog posts; no matter how uncomfortable it may make people feel. I believe in the truth of the matter and not censoring what humans are really capable of. When you watch a murder documentary on youtube, a quick reel on Instagram, or a video on tiktok you take in the information, but do you really feel the horror or, even consider that could happen to you, or those around you?

This isn’t to fear monger, or scare you, but it is a practical question you need to be asking yourself. When you watch this media you have to understand there’s a reality behind it, which is darker than your nervous system could ever cope with, or your mind could truly comprehend if you had to think about it, or even live it.

For those who may not know about the Moors Murderers case this wasn’t a fault of the children, nor really the society, or community at the time. You can research and watch media on this in further detail, if you wish to see more, but the crux was this was two calculated, sick, twisted individual adults who manipulated their community around them. The children they targeted they would build relationships with their community, their neighbours, and their parents. This is why it was hard to spot, and wasn’t a murder situation where clues were left, or someone could have spotted them. They very much calcualted how to do this without people becoming suspicious of them.

Parents educated their children on never getting into cars, and to run straight home. They had given advanced warnings. This is why it was so sinister of Ian and Myra because they built the relationships. The children were familiar with them in their local community. When it came to light the reality of who the murderers were, you knew why the children would have gone into their car, as opposed to running home because these weren’t “strangers”, they were familiar faces. They would have felt safe enough or familiar enough to accept a ride in certain instances and circumstances.

Children were going missing, but the police and the community didn’t know how to handle this. Not due to lack of willpower or want, but because of how calculated it was, that this wasn’t a “usual” case – and I say that very lightly, as every case is serious, and should never be minimised. I mean where children go missing, sometimes its a case of running away from home, they’re helped, it could be kidnapping where they can search for witnesses, it could be a multitude of reasons, but there were no clues.

Was it really their family member who was able to help crack part of the case? Yep, Ian Brady and Myra Hindley were caught because her 17-year-old brother-in-law. David witnessed them commit a murder and immediately called the police. Without his willingness to phone the police it may have taken several more awful incidents to happen to people for them to have ever been caught. This is why I said in my previous paragraphs how you must choose how aware you are, and who to be in this world. David could have turned a blind eye, David could have been as twisted as them and condoned it, David was obviously fearful that they could turn on him? He still did the right thing.

Without speaking up and speaking out monsters of humans will be in this world, and do sickening things that readers of the blog wouldn’t even want to imagine, but its true, and it happens. Without David reporting this, who knows how many other people would have been affected by these two monsters.

If anyone still is looking into unsolved murder cases in Manchester then please remember Keith Bennett. If anyone is still searching The Moors, please remember Keith Bennett. If any police detective still cares, please keep The Moors in your mind to dig, search and recover.

If this article is found in later years, please remember on The Moors is Keith. If the national trust or a heritage site ever acquire the land, please remember Keith Bennett, and please dig the land for him, before the land. If a propert developer even wants to buy the Saddleworth Moors, please remember Keith Bennett whilst you dig the ground of the foundations. For historians that are researching Sadleworth Moor, please remember Keith Bennett. For the archeologists that are documenting or exavating, please remember Keith Bennett.

The unsolved mysterys of Manchester are still valid in 2026 today.
