How To Become A Crouiper Games Dealer In A Casino UK
You’re looking into how to become a croupier in the UK. Somehow you’ve come across this because you want to be a croupier and want to know how? Did you watch a film, hear someone speak about it or see the glamour and think yep! Well in the UK casinos it’s a bit different. The casinos in Manchester have certainly changed since I worked there, but here’s some advice on if you want to learn how to become a games dealer croupier for a casino or cruise ship!
Here’s some real truth on the casino and what it’s like to be a croupier in the UK.
I think it’s one of the most unusual jobs to have in the UK because it’s an entirely different world int seems, but that’s just me. I’ve done many jobs over my time!
The shift patterns were once blocks of three:
7am – 3pm
3pm – 11pm
11pm – 7am
However, some casino’s have now adjusted these shift patterns meaning they could be even more sporadic starting at 4pm and finishing at 1am, some you’ll finish at 6am etc. So be prepared to work varied shift patterns – this is a non-negotiable to the casino. You can get preferences at times to which shift pattern suits you more such as mornings, days, nights, but you will work a variety shifts over your course of your croupier career.
The beginning of your career – the training.
Being a croupier isn’t a job you can just apply for. You have to be trained in a training school for several weeks (around 6 weeks). There is training, skill, and mental arithmetic to this job role – you must pass the training school to even be considered for a job in a casino.
You’ll begin your training learning the skills of what it takes to become a croupier. This involves chipping up, learning timetables, how to push out the stack of chips on a roulette table, how to deal cards at blackjack and three card poker, learning how to place bets, stack up the chips on the casino table, clean your hands, policy and so much more. If this sounds a lot its because it is.
The casino is a place of policy, rules, and mandatory procedures that must be followed. There’s no fancy card tricks, you’re not allowed to mess with any value chip, and you must deal towards at camera and mic. The training course is just the beginning of your career. Unfortunately with this course its an all or nothing pass or fail.
You must be able to deal all three games consistently, confidently, and accurately.
You cannot go to a casino without knowing this and you would either have to stay for more training or exit the course.
You’ll be tested on your mental arithmetic and you have to learn the following timetables:
These are the times tables you need to learn:
– 35 times table, for when you see a chip in the straight up position (in the middle of the number or on the number within the box)
– 17 times table, for when you see a chip in the split position (on the side of the number)
– 8 times table, for when you see a chip in the corner position (on the corner)
– 11 times table, for when you see a chip in the street position
– 5 times table, for when you see a chip in the six line position
and so forth.
You’ll have to learn the layout, the areas and the sections of the tables:
| Jeu Zero | 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15 |
| Voisins du Zero | 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25 |
| Orphelins | 1, 20, 14, 31, 9, 17, 34, 6 |
| Tiers du Cylindre | 27, 19, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16, 33 |
You’ll learn how the cards need to be dealt on a blackjack table, how to calculate the bets and which hands to use. Yes, I’m being serious that you must use your left hand for one purpose and your right for another. In poker you’ll be taught the hands, how to deal and how to work out the bets.
You’ll learn different stages each week, but you are tested frequently and you will have to use your head! You are never allowed a calculator, piece of paper or anything within the casino floor, so you must have the arithmetic to pass this course. You don’t have to start by being great at maths or arithmetic to be a croupier, but you must learn and acquire the skill to pass the course.
You will learn how to spin a ball correctly on a roulette wheel and so much more. It can be mentally challenging, a few of us did cry – including myself – it can be hard, and sometimes you just don’t know at all. You’ll be pressed for the answer, but you may have to work out 3 or 4 calculations to add together.
For example:
The chips are valued at £2
You have 7 chips on the corner – 7*8 = 56
You have 12 chips on the split (side of the number) – 12 * 17 = 204
You have 5 chips on the middle number in the centre – 35 * 5 = 175
= 435 for the pay-out
You would have to do this calculation in your head, hold numbers or ask your inspector and then add them all together
Now imagine it’s a higher value
The chips are valued at £25 – yes this can really happen with “high rollers” as they’re called in the casino.
You have 7 chips on the corner – 7*8 = 56
You have 12 chips on the split (side of the number) – 12 * 17 = 204
You have 5 chips on the middle number in the centre – 35 * 5 = 175
x £25 a chip
= 10, 875 for the pay-out
You’ll be tested in a variety of different ways, but if you’ve read through this far and haven’t been scared off. I wanted to be realistic that the course isn’t necessarily an breeze, but you can pass it as consistently over 6 weeks you will know if it’s for you or not.
And then… you’ll step into a casino, but we’ll leave that for another blog post!
