Running Tips When You’ve Never Run Before: How I Started Running From Zero

I wanted to learn how to run a mile, but I genuinely had no idea where to start. I had never been someone who went out for a run for fun, and honestly, the idea of running always felt like something other people did. You know the type — the people who casually say they went for a “quick 5K” before breakfast while I was still trying to convince myself to get off the sofa. Running looked simple from the outside, but when you have never actually been a runner, it feels like a completely different world.

I decided I wanted to change that.

Not because I suddenly became someone who loved running, but because I knew learning how to run would be good for me. I wanted to improve my fitness, build my confidence, challenge myself, and prove that I could do something I had always avoided. The goal sounded simple: learn how to run one mile.

But easier said than done, right?

Like most people, I went straight to Google. I searched everything from “running tips for beginners” to “how to start running when you are unfit” and “how to run a mile as a beginner”. I expected to find a simple step-by-step guide that would tell me exactly what to do.

Instead, I found myself reading advice that still felt too advanced.

I would see things like:

“Run for 5 minutes, walk for 1 minute.”

And I remember thinking…

What if you cannot even run for 5 minutes?

That was my starting point.

Even the beginner advice felt like it was written for someone who already had a level of fitness. Someone who could already jog a little bit. Someone who just needed structure.

But what about the people starting from absolute zero?

The people who struggle after 30 seconds?

The people who are completely new to running?

That is where I was.

I’m now in my early 30s, and running has never been something I enjoyed. I wasn’t naturally good at it, I didn’t find it relaxing, and I definitely wasn’t someone who woke up excited to go outside and run.

But I knew there was value in learning.

Sometimes you have to become a beginner at something uncomfortable to grow.

The First Challenge: Actually Running

The first hurdle was the obvious one.

Actually running.

It sounds funny because obviously running involves running, but when you have never done it before, that first step feels intimidating.

You put your trainers on.

You walk outside.

And then you realise…

Right, I actually have to run now.

There is no hiding behind preparation anymore.

The first few attempts felt strange. My body was not used to the movement. My breathing changed quickly. My legs felt heavier than expected. I became very aware of every little thing happening.

Running requires your body to work differently compared to walking.

Your breathing, posture, muscles, coordination, and stamina all come into play.

It is not just about moving your legs faster.

It is learning a completely new skill.

Things I Wish I Knew Before Starting Running

Before I started, I honestly thought running was simple.

Put on trainers.

Go outside.

Run.

But there are so many little things that can make the experience easier and more enjoyable.

Here are the things I wish I knew before I started.

Wear a Supportive Running Bra

This one is important and something people do not always talk about.

Running involves a lot of movement, and having the right support can make a huge difference.

You do not want to spend your entire run feeling uncomfortable because everything is moving around.

A supportive sports bra helps you feel secure, comfortable, and more confident while exercising.

It might seem like a small detail, but feeling physically comfortable can make you want to keep going.

Wear Supportive Clothing

Another thing I realised was that the right clothing matters.

I started wearing supportive shorts that helped hold everything in place.

This sounds like such a small thing, but the extra support around my stomach helped reduce that uncomfortable feeling of everything moving while I ran.

Sometimes when you are starting something new, little changes make a big difference.

Feeling comfortable in your clothes can remove one more reason to avoid going out.

Do Not Start Too Fast

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is trying to do too much too soon.

There is so much pressure online to follow specific plans and hit certain milestones.

But the reality is:

Your starting point is your starting point.

You cannot compare your first run to someone else’s tenth year of running.

Go slow.

Build gradually.

Allow your body time to adjust.

Running is not about proving how fast you can go.

It is about building consistency.

Create Small Milestones Instead of Focusing on Distance

One thing that really helped me was changing the way I looked at progress.

A full mile felt impossible.

It felt like such a big goal.

Instead, I focused on tiny wins.

Run to the bus stop.

Run to the next lamppost.

Run until the end of the street.

Run halfway.

Then repeat.

These small milestones gave me proof that I was improving.

Progress does not always look like running further.

Sometimes progress is simply running a little longer than yesterday.

What I Did During My Beginning Stages

My beginning looked very different from the typical running plans you see online.

I did not start with running for five minutes.

I started with 10-second intervals.

That was my level.

I would run for 10 seconds, then walk until I recovered.

Then repeat.

Eventually, I built this up to 20 seconds.

And honestly?

I stayed at 20-second intervals for weeks.

At first, I felt like I should be progressing faster.

I thought maybe I was doing something wrong.

But then I realised something important:

My body was adapting.

Even though it felt slow, I was still improving.

Those 10-second runs were building my stamina.

They were teaching my body how to handle running.

They were creating the foundation.

Why Generic Running Plans Do Not Work For Everyone

One of the biggest things I noticed when researching beginner running plans was that many of them assume everyone starts from the same place.

They do not.

Someone who walks every day, exercises regularly, or already has a fitness background will have a completely different starting point compared to someone who has never exercised before.

There are so many factors that affect running ability:

  • Your current fitness level
  • Your daily movement
  • Your lifestyle habits
  • Your sleep
  • Your nutrition
  • Your previous exercise experience
  • Your confidence

A six-week running programme might work perfectly for one person but feel impossible for someone else.

That does not mean you are failing.

It simply means your journey needs to match your starting point.

The Real Talk About Running

Nobody really talks about the awkward stage.

The stage where running feels uncomfortable.

The stage where you feel like everyone is watching.

The stage where you question why you decided this was a good idea.

Because honestly?

Running can feel uncomfortable.

You might:

  • Get a stitch
  • Feel out of breath
  • Feel awkward
  • Feel embarrassed
  • Feel like you look silly
  • Notice your posture
  • Realise muscles you forgot existed

You may even have moments where you think:

“Am I actually getting better at this?”

But the answer is yes.

Because every time you go out, you are building something.

You are building endurance.

You are building confidence.

You are building discipline.

Running Also Teaches You Patience

One unexpected lesson I learned from running is patience.

We live in a world where we want quick results.

We want to improve immediately.

We want to see progress straight away.

But running does not work like that.

You cannot force your body to suddenly have more stamina overnight.

You have to give it time.

You have to repeat the uncomfortable parts.

You have to trust the process.

And that lesson applies to so many areas of life.

The Biggest Mindset Shift

The biggest change was realising I did not need to become a “runner” overnight.

I just needed to become someone who runs.

There is a difference.

You do not need expensive equipment.

You do not need to be naturally athletic.

You do not need to be fast.

You just need to start.

A runner is not someone who can immediately run 10K.

A runner is someone who keeps showing up.

Final Thoughts

If you have never run before and you feel intimidated, start where you are.

Forget comparing yourself to people online.

Forget forcing yourself into a plan that feels impossible.

Forget thinking you need to be good at it straight away.

Start with 10 seconds.

Start with one street.

Start with one small goal.

Because every person who runs today had a first run.

They had a first attempt.

They had a moment where they wondered if they could do it.

The difference is they kept going.

And slowly, something that once felt impossible becomes something you can actually do.
