How to Enjoy a Full English Breakfast for Half the Calories (Without Giving Up Any of Your Favourite Foods)

Written by:

A full English breakfast is one of the UK’s most iconic meals. Whether you’re enjoying one at a hotel breakfast buffet, a local café, or making it at home, there’s something satisfying about seeing a plate piled high with all the classics.

The downside? A traditional full English can easily contain 1,000–1,500 calories depending on portion sizes and cooking methods.

Most “healthy” versions solve this problem by removing half the ingredients. Suddenly there’s no black pudding, no hash brown, no sausage, and somehow you’re left staring at a plate of tomatoes and disappointment.

I wanted a different solution.

Instead of removing foods, I simply cut the portions in half.

That way, I still get to enjoy every single ingredient that makes a full English special, while dramatically reducing the calories and making the ingredients stretch much further.

The Half-Portion Full English Method

The secret is simple: take a normal full English breakfast and divide every ingredient into two portions.

Eat one half today and freeze the other half for another breakfast.

Not only does this reduce calories, but it can also cut food waste and save money.

What to Freeze and Save for Later

If you’re making a full English at home, here’s how to portion everything.

Sausage

Instead of serving two sausages, cook one sausage and slice it into pieces.

The slices spread across the plate, meaning you still get sausage in almost every bite.

Freeze the second sausage for another breakfast.

Bacon

Rather than using two rashers, serve one rasher cut into smaller pieces.

You still get the smoky flavour throughout the meal without doubling the calories.

Freeze the remaining bacon for next time.

Black Pudding

Cut one slice of black pudding in half.

The rich flavour means a half portion still adds plenty of taste to the plate.

Freeze the remaining half-slice or divide the entire pack into individual portions before freezing.

Hash Brown

A full-sized hash brown can easily be cut in half.

Cook one half and freeze the other.

You’ll still get that crispy potato crunch without needing the whole thing.

Egg

One egg is usually enough for a balanced breakfast.

If you normally have two eggs, simply stick to one and save the second for another meal.

Baked Beans

Instead of pouring half a tin onto your plate, use a small serving.

Transfer the remaining beans into a freezer-safe container and freeze for future breakfasts.

Mushrooms

Slice your mushrooms and cook only half of what you’d normally use.

Freeze the uncooked leftovers or use them later in the week in pasta dishes, omelettes or stir-fries.

Tomatoes

Rather than serving a whole grilled tomato, use half.

The other half can be frozen for cooking or added to soups, sauces and casseroles.

Toast

Serve one slice of toast instead of two.

If you buy bread in bulk, freeze individual slices and simply toast them straight from frozen whenever you need them.

What Does a Half-Portion Full English Look Like?

A lower-calorie full English could include:

  • 1 egg
  • ½–1 sausage, sliced
  • 1 rasher bacon
  • ½ slice black pudding
  • ½ hash brown
  • Small portion baked beans
  • Half grilled tomato
  • Small serving of mushrooms
  • 1 slice toast

The plate still looks full.

The flavours are all there.

Most importantly, you don’t feel like you’ve had to give up anything.

Why This Works

The reality is that most people don’t miss foods as much as they miss flavours.

By keeping every ingredient on the plate, you’re still satisfying the craving for a traditional full English breakfast.

You’re simply eating smaller portions of each component.

The result is:

  • Fewer calories
  • Less food waste
  • More breakfasts from one shop
  • Better portion control
  • A more balanced meal

The Breakfast Buffet Trick

This idea actually came from hotel breakfast buffets.

When faced with dozens of tempting options, I realised I didn’t need full servings of everything.

Instead, I could take a little bit of each item.

One small sausage.

Half a hash brown.

A spoonful of beans.

A few mushrooms.

Half a slice of black pudding.

The plate still looked like a proper full English, but it contained a fraction of the calories of the oversized versions often served in restaurants.

Final Thoughts

If you love a full English breakfast but don’t love the calorie count, you don’t have to start removing ingredients.

Instead, try halving everything.

Freeze the spare portions for future breakfasts, enjoy all the traditional flavours, reduce food waste, and create a breakfast that’s far more weight-loss friendly without feeling restrictive.

Because sometimes the smartest food swap isn’t removing your favourite foods – it’s simply eating a little less of each one.
