Bearberries are small, colourful berries that grow on low-growing evergreen shrubs. They are also known as kinnikinnick and are found in various cooler regions of the world. These little berries are often recognised for their bright appearance, although they are not as commonly eaten as strawberries, blueberries or raspberries.
I love to introduce new flavours into my diet, and I love volume eating and finding new ways to introduce different ingredients into my meals! Exploring less familiar fruits is a fun way to learn about different plants and discover new ingredients.
What Do Bearberries Contain in Vitamins and Minerals?
Bearberries contain natural plant compounds, although their nutritional composition can vary depending on the variety and growing conditions.
Potential nutritional components include:
- Fibre
- Natural plant compounds
- Antioxidants
- Small amounts of vitamins and minerals
Bearberries are not a well-established everyday food source, and detailed nutritional information for fresh berries is limited. It is important not to assume they provide large amounts of particular vitamins or minerals without reliable nutritional data.
Their unusual appearance makes them an interesting plant to learn about, but there is an important difference between a berry being edible in certain circumstances and being suitable to eat as a regular snack.
Are Bearberries Healthy?
Bearberries have traditionally been used for purposes other than eating, particularly their leaves. However, the berries themselves are not commonly consumed as an everyday fruit, and they are not as well studied nutritionally as familiar edible berries.
Healthy eating is not just about choosing foods that are considered healthy. It is about understanding what you are eating, finding foods you enjoy and including a variety of ingredients that contribute to a balanced diet.
I love volume eating, and variety is a huge part of that for me. Give me a buffet and it is my dream! I always like to encourage people to think about how they can increase the volume and variety of their meals with suitable fruits and vegetables, rather than automatically thinking about restriction.
However, bearberries are not a berry I would recommend adding to a fruit salad or eating by the handful without first establishing that they are correctly identified and safe to consume.
Bearberries and Antioxidants
Bearberry plants contain naturally occurring plant compounds. Antioxidants are substances that help protect cells from oxidative damage, and a varied diet containing plant foods can provide different beneficial compounds.
Other familiar foods that contribute antioxidants to the diet include:
- Blueberries
- Strawberries
- Blackberries
- Apples
- Citrus fruits
- Leafy green vegetables
- Nuts and seeds
If your aim is to increase the variety of colourful, nutrient-rich foods in your diet, these familiar options are more practical choices than experimenting with unfamiliar wild berries.
Are Bearberries Good for Digestion?
Fibre is an important part of a balanced diet because it supports normal digestion and bowel function.
Fibre-rich foods can help support:
- Normal bowel movements
- Digestive health
- Feeling satisfied after meals
- A varied, balanced diet
However, I would not recommend relying on bearberries as a source of dietary fibre because their nutritional composition and suitability for regular consumption are not well established.
If you want to increase your fibre intake, everyday foods such as oats, beans, lentils, apples, pears, raspberries and vegetables are more straightforward options.
Can You Eat Bearberries?
Bearberries are not generally eaten like the familiar berries you would buy in a supermarket. Their suitability for consumption depends on correct identification and the specific plant involved.
Do not assume that a wild berry is safe simply because it looks similar to another fruit. If you come across bearberries while walking, travelling or exploring nature, avoid eating them unless their identity and safety have been reliably confirmed.
It is also important to distinguish the berries from bearberry leaves, which have a separate history of traditional use. The safety of one part of a plant does not automatically establish the safety of another.
