Bilberries: Vitamins, Minerals, Health Benefits and How to Eat Them

Written by:

Bilberries are small, dark blue-purple berries that grow on low-growing shrubs, particularly in woodland and heathland areas across Europe. They are closely related to blueberries, but they are usually darker inside, with a deep purple colour and a slightly tart, sweet flavour. They are delicious little fruits that can add colour, variety and nutrients to a healthy, balanced diet.

I love introducing new flavours into my diet, and I love volume eating and finding new ways to include different ingredients in my meals! Bilberries are a great example of how something small can bring a lot of flavour and variety to everyday eating.

What Do Bilberries Contain in Vitamins and Minerals?

  • Fibre
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin K
  • Manganese
  • Potassium
  • Antioxidants
  • Anthocyanins, which are natural plant compounds responsible for their dark purple colour

Their sweet and slightly tart flavour makes them easy to enjoy in different meals, snacks and recipes.

You can eat bilberries:

  • Fresh as a snack
  • Added to fruit salads
  • Blended into smoothies
  • Mixed into yoghurt bowls
  • Sprinkled over porridge
  • Added to homemade muffins and desserts
  • Cooked into sauces and fruit compotes

Are Bilberries Healthy?

Yes, bilberries are a nutritious fruit that can be included as part of a healthy, balanced diet.

Like other berries, they provide fibre, vitamins, minerals and plant compounds that contribute to their nutritional value.

Although fruit contains natural sugars, it also provides beneficial nutrients, water and fibre. This is why I always encourage people to look at the bigger picture rather than focusing on sugar alone.

Healthy eating is not just about avoiding certain foods. It is about choosing a variety of whole foods that provide your body with the nutrients it needs!

I love volume eating and having a variety of foods on my plate. Give me a buffet and it is my dream! I like to remind people that healthy eating does not have to mean restricting yourself. You can find ways to increase the volume of your meals by including more fruits and vegetables, experimenting with different ingredients and discovering what you actually enjoy eating.

Bilberries are a simple way to add more colour, flavour and nutritional variety to your diet.

Bilberries Contain Antioxidants

One of the most interesting nutritional features of bilberries is their antioxidant content.

Bilberries contain anthocyanins, a group of natural plant pigments that give the berries their deep blue-purple colour. These compounds belong to a wider group of plant substances called polyphenols.

Antioxidants help protect cells from oxidative stress, which occurs when there is an imbalance between free radicals and the body’s antioxidant defences.

Including a variety of plant foods in your diet can help you obtain different beneficial plant compounds.

Other foods that provide antioxidants include:

  • Blueberries
  • Blackberries
  • Strawberries
  • Cherries
  • Red cabbage
  • Dark leafy greens

Bilberries are another colourful option to add to your meals, especially if you enjoy experimenting with different berries.

Can Bilberries Support Digestion?

Bilberries contain dietary fibre, which is an important part of a healthy diet.

Fibre contributes to:

  • Normal bowel movements
  • Supporting digestive health
  • Helping you feel satisfied after meals
  • Supporting a healthy gut environment

Getting enough fibre can be challenging if your diet does not include many fruits, vegetables, pulses or wholegrains.

Adding berries to your breakfast, snacks or desserts is one simple way to increase the variety of fibre-containing foods you eat throughout the day.

Try mixing bilberries into yoghurt with oats, nuts and seeds for a combination of textures, flavours and nutrients.

Bilberries Provide Vitamin C

Bilberries contain vitamin C, although the amount you receive depends on the portion size and how the berries have been stored or prepared.

Vitamin C contributes to several important functions in the body, including:

  • Normal immune system function
  • Collagen formation
  • Normal functioning of the nervous system
  • Improving the absorption of iron from plant-based foods
  • Protecting cells from oxidative stress

Collagen is a structural protein found in skin, bones, cartilage and other tissues. Vitamin C is needed for the body to produce it normally.

Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables can help you obtain vitamin C alongside other essential nutrients.

Are Bilberries Good for Eye Health?

Bilberries are often associated with eye health because of their anthocyanin content.

These natural plant compounds have attracted scientific interest, but it is important not to assume that eating bilberries will improve eyesight, prevent eye conditions or replace treatment.

There is not enough strong evidence to claim that bilberries reliably improve vision in healthy people or treat eye diseases.

However, they can still be a nutritious addition to a varied diet. Eating a range of fruits and vegetables is a sensible way to obtain the vitamins, minerals and plant compounds your body needs.

Other foods that contribute nutrients important for eye health include:

  • Carrots
  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Eggs
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Peppers

The best approach is to focus on your overall diet rather than relying on one particular fruit.

Bilberries Contain Vitamin K

Bilberries provide some vitamin K, a nutrient that contributes to normal blood clotting and the maintenance of healthy bones.

Vitamin K is needed for the production of proteins involved in these processes.

Other foods that provide vitamin K include:

  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Brussels sprouts

Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables can help you obtain different vitamins and minerals rather than relying on the same foods every day.

People taking warfarin or certain other anticoagulant medicines should follow their healthcare professional’s advice about maintaining a consistent vitamin K intake.

Can Bilberries Support Skin Health?

Bilberries contain vitamin C and natural plant compounds that contribute to their nutritional value.

Vitamin C supports normal collagen formation, which helps maintain the normal structure of the skin. Antioxidants are also involved in protecting cells from oxidative stress.

However, eating bilberries alone will not guarantee clearer skin or prevent signs of ageing.

Healthy-looking skin is influenced by several factors, including:

  • Nutrition
  • Hydration
  • Sleep
  • Sun protection
  • Skincare habits
  • General lifestyle

Adding a variety of nutrient-rich fruits, including bilberries, can be one small part of looking after yourself.

Can Bilberries Help With Weight Management?

Bilberries can fit into a balanced weight management plan because they are naturally low in fat and provide water and fibre.

Their flavour makes them a useful addition to meals and snacks without needing lots of extra ingredients.

Try adding bilberries to plain yoghurt, porridge or a homemade smoothie. You can combine them with protein sources, wholegrains, nuts or seeds to create a more substantial meal or snack.

However, weight management is not about eating one particular fruit.

It is about developing sustainable habits that suit your needs, including:

  • Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables
  • Including protein sources
  • Choosing a variety of whole foods
  • Finding enjoyable ways to move your body
  • Eating enough to support your daily activities
  • Building habits you can maintain over time

Bilberries can be part of that approach without needing to treat them as a special weight loss food.

Why Are Bilberries Popular in Healthy Recipes?

Bilberries have a lovely deep colour and a sweet, slightly tart flavour that works well in both sweet and savoury recipes.

They can bring flavour and variety to meals without requiring lots of additional ingredients.

Popular ways to enjoy bilberries include:

  • Smoothies
  • Overnight oats
  • Porridge
  • Yoghurt bowls
  • Fruit salads
  • Homemade muffins
  • Pancakes
  • Chia puddings
  • Fruit sauces
  • Homemade desserts

Their flavour works particularly well with:

  • Apples
  • Pears
  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Lemon
  • Cinnamon
  • Plain yoghurt
  • Oats
  • Nuts and seeds

And do not forget savoury meals! You can experiment with berries in salads, particularly when paired with leafy greens, nuts and a tangy dressing. Fruit does not have to be limited to breakfast or dessert.

Start with combinations you already enjoy and gradually experiment with new ingredients.

Are Bilberries Better Than Blueberries?

Bilberries and blueberries are closely related, but they are not exactly the same fruit.

Bilberries are generally smaller, darker and more intensely coloured inside, while cultivated blueberries often have pale green flesh beneath their blue skin.

Both contain fibre, vitamins and beneficial plant compounds, including anthocyanins.

The exact nutritional content varies depending on the variety, growing conditions, ripeness and portion size.

Rather than worrying about which berry is the healthiest, I would encourage you to enjoy a mixture of fruits where possible.

For example:

  • Strawberries provide vitamin C and fibre.
  • Bananas provide potassium and vitamin B6.
  • Oranges provide vitamin C.
  • Blueberries provide anthocyanins and other plant compounds.
  • Bilberries provide fibre, vitamins and naturally occurring anthocyanins.

Different fruits offer different nutritional benefits, so variety is a useful goal.

How to Add More Bilberries to Your Diet

Adding bilberries to your meals is simple, whether you buy them fresh, frozen or dried.

Try:

  • Adding fresh bilberries to a fruit salad.
  • Mixing them into yoghurt with nuts and seeds.
  • Blending them into a smoothie.
  • Sprinkling them over porridge or overnight oats.
  • Adding frozen bilberries to homemade pancakes.
  • Making a simple bilberry compote to serve with yoghurt.
  • Including them in homemade muffins.
  • Mixing them with apples or pears for a fruit-based dessert.

Frozen berries can be particularly convenient because you can keep them available without worrying about eating them immediately.

Dried bilberries are another option, although they are more concentrated in natural sugars per gram because much of their water has been removed. Check the ingredients if you want to avoid products with added sugar.

Are There Any Downsides to Eating Bilberries? How Many Calories Are in Bilberries?

Bilberries are a nutritious fruit, but it is still useful to understand how preparation and portion sizes affect their nutritional content.

Fresh bilberries contain roughly 40 to 60 calories per 100 grams, although the exact amount can vary. They also provide natural sugars, fibre and water.

Dried bilberries can contain considerably more calories per 100 grams because the water has been removed, so fresh and dried berries should not be compared gram for gram without considering this difference.

Some people may need to consider their individual dietary requirements when choosing portions or combining bilberries with other ingredients. For most people, however, fresh bilberries can fit comfortably into a balanced diet.

If you have never tried them before, start with a small handful and see how you enjoy the flavour.

It is also worth remembering that eating a single food will not automatically make your diet healthy. What matters most is the overall variety and balance of the foods you eat.

Final Thoughts: Should You Try Bilberries?

Bilberries are small but nutritious fruits that provide fibre, vitamins, minerals and naturally occurring plant compounds, including anthocyanins.

Although they may be less familiar than strawberries or cultivated blueberries, they are a lovely option for anyone who enjoys trying different ingredients and bringing more variety into their diet.

Whether you eat them fresh, add them to porridge, blend them into smoothies or use them in homemade desserts, bilberries are an easy way to make everyday meals more colourful and interesting.

I am always encouraging people to experiment with their food rather than sticking to the same ingredients every day. You never know what you might discover you enjoy!

Healthy eating does not have to be complicated, restrictive or boring. Sometimes it is simply about finding new whole foods, trying different combinations and making your meals work for you.

So, if you come across bilberries, why not give them a try? They could become another little ingredient to add to your fruit bowls, breakfast recipes and volume-eating ideas.
