We’re all trying our best to be protected in the sun and try those anti-aging methods to reduce our chances of prematurely aging. The sun is an amazing resource and I personally love to be in the sun, topping up my vitamin D. However, I’m also light skinned which means I’m prone to burning, but my family heritage means I can keep a tan if I wish. I adore being out in the sun. I love lounging, being in a pool, fishing, out for a walk in nature, hiking, and boosting my Vitamin D naturally where I can. As someone who has worked nights having an extra boost of vitamin D, but I also don’t like to burn my skin where possible. If I have to walk around a city where I can’t top up my sun cream as often, I like to be able to wear UV-protective clothing to help top up my protection.  

Sunlight includes rays of ultraviolet (UV) radiation – UVA & UBV. Exposure to those rays can lead to sunburn, sun stroke, redness to the skin, drying skin, premature skin aging, and skin cancer. Sun cream is an all year round essential, but even the best SPF products can be limited. If you were to swim in a pool, jump off a boat into the sea, play in the waves, work up a sweat, this can lead to the sun cream becoming ineffective, washing off, or wearing off.  

I’ll be honest, I didn’t know that UPF clothing was even a thing until a few years ago! It’s becoming more popular now, but it wasn’t a well known textile when I was growing up. A 2022 study found that “UPF textiles worked significantly better than sunscreen when it comes to its overall UV-protective capacity. “The four textiles provided superior UVR protection when compared to the two sunscreens tested. All fabrics blocked erythemogenic UVR better than the sunscreens, as measured by SPF, UPF, and % UVB-blocking. Each fabric was superior to the sunscreens in blocking full-spectrum UVR, as measured by CW and % UVA-blocking” (Slip versus Slop: A Head-to-Head Comparison of UV-Protective Clothing to Sunscreen).

Clothing and accessories are designed for sun protection and tested to help protect from the sun’s harmful rays. You may know by now of SPF (sun protection factor) — this only protects and is effective against UVB rays. UPF clothing protects by filtering both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB). 

Think a new summer wardrobe, but with extra protection. Start with UPF clothing, and then you can add your sun cream as usual for any skin that is exposed.
