When I first stumbled onto market research companies and mystery shopping as a side hustle my first thought was is this a scam? What is mystery shopping? Can I actually earn money and was this legit? I soon found out it was legit! What is market research though? It’s where companies will reward you for your time by taking tasks and giving feedback.

You will either be in a physical store such as a bar or restaurant as a mystery shopper. Imagine being paid to eat, review, and give feedback on the things you eat and drink? You may be seeing if stock is available on the shelves in a store, or giving your opinion via Zoom. There are many different ways that companies achieve their market research and mystery shopping feedback.

I’ve been able to give my opinion on electronics, drinks, and more within the mystery shopping industry and market research. I’ve had the opportunity to be paid to eat for the day and be monitored throughout the day on the effects, and been given free products to keep for my reviews.

Be aware that there is some work required in mystery shopping. This can be in the form of a video, review, or questionnaire. usually in the form of a quick review. You may have to pay beforehand and the company will reimburse you with the receipt/review confirmed. However, it’s usually an hour os less for a task.

In-home interviews 

In-home interviews might initially seem daunting, but in reality, they are far from it. Similar to focus groups, but in this case, you’ll be providing your individual opinions directly to the company. This entails activities such as visiting a business location, recording a shopping trip, testing a website on-site, and various other opportunities.

They aim to evaluate the ease of navigation during your testing, ensuring you can locate relevant pages and buttons that are clickable. Throughout this process, they will be taking notes, and upon completion of the task, you will receive payment.

Mystery shopping 

The company will request you to perform a mystery shopping experience to either pose a question, gather product knowledge, or assess the customer service experience. You will receive instructions beforehand outlining the specific questions or tasks they want you to undertake. The company encourages you to behave as naturally as possible, considering this is a mystery shop, and for that duration, you are to assume the role of a genuine customer.
